Movies

Rankings:

***** = Absolutely outstanding. 5 *’s are given to very few movies. Usually only one movie per franchise, actor, director, etc, can receive a full five rating, and most franchises, actors, et. al, won’t receive a 5.

**** = a very good movie that I would recommend to most people.

*** = Okay movie, not particularly good or memorable, but not too bad either.

** = a very bad movie, promises not delivered. Most animal movies will revive this rating because of animal deaths or almost deaths.

* = Extremely Bad or Total Bomb. Very few movies will get a rating this low, and most that do will require a note. These are movies that are so bad you can’t even watch them to make fun of them. Or they have been too heavily recommended over the years only to turn out very bad because of inappropriate undeserving hype.

Notes:

1776 – I watch this movie every year on the Fourth of July, and it is by far my favorite musical, though I’m not a huge fan of the genre overall.

Animal Crackers – I am a huge Marx Brothers Fan, and this is my favorite of all their movies. It’s also one of the most underrated of their movies as well, usually falling behind in recognition to A Night at the Opera, A Day at the Races, Duck Soup, and the Coconuts. I haven’t seen all the Marx Brothers movies yet (though I do have all of them in one way or another), but from what I hear the ones I haven’t seen aren’t very good. I’ll find out for myself soon enough I’m sure.

The Atomic Brain – this is the first of many MST3K episodes that are double billed in this list of movies. Because every episode of MST3K comments on a Movie, each episode counts (in my opinion) as an entry for this list. There are two rating for every MST3K listed here, such as this one which is rated “**/3.” The first number (as indicated by the stars) is the rating of the movie on its own (usually they aren’t very good) the number following the slash written in Arab numerals is the rating of the episode w/r/t the comments on the movie.

Austin Powers – I can’t stand the Austin Powers movies or Mike Myers in general. I remember liking it a little bit when it first came out and I was much younger. Looking back on it I am disappointed in my younger self for having found it funny then.

The Bank Dick – this is my favorite WC Fields movies, of which I’ve seen ten not including the shorts.

Beetlejuice – This is one of 5 movies that I watch every year for my October-fright-fest marathon. The other movies are: The Rocky Horror Picture Show, The Nightmare Before Christmas, and the Two original Ghostbusters.

Caddyshack – This is an example of a movie that was over-recommended to me for years, and when I finally saw it, it had failed to deliver all that it could have been. Directed by Herald Ramis (who directed several of my favorite movies), and starring Bill Murry, Chevy Chase and Rodney Dangerfield, should have been way better than this. How could they mess up a movie this promising? And why do so many people not see how bad this movie actually is?

City Hunter – My favorite and most underrated Jacky Chan Movie.

Ghostbusters II – this is not a mistake, I am one of the few people in the world to likes the second Ghostbusters more than the first, in fact I’ve only ever come across one other person that agrees with me about it. Most people like to hate on the second Ghostbusters, but it is a great film, so get over it. Besides, I here there’s a new one that people hate even more, but I haven’t seen that one yet.

Groundhog Day – this movie is in a three way tie for my all-time favorite movie. If there’s a quick question of “what’s your favorite movie” I usually say this one because most people know it or at least know of it, whereas the other two are much more obscure.

Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle – I watch this movie every Easter. Don’t ask me how that tradition started.

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus – This movie has the dubious honor of being my least favorite movie of all time, but I’ve been over why it’s so bad before, so I won’t go into it here.

Ladder 49 – this movie would be a three maybe two star movie, if it wasn’t for the fact that my dad was in it as the helicopter pilot in the scene where Morris Chestnut gets his face melted off with steam, so it gets the 4 stare ratting.

Laserblast – for some reason that I will never understand, Lenard Maltin gave this movie 2.5 out of 4 stars in his review, which would make it roughly a 3 in my system. There is no way it should be rated that high, even its rating here of one star is generous. That being said it is the last episode of MST3K to be aired on Comedy Central, and at the time it was thought to be the final episode of the series altogether, and because it was a psudo-finaly, they held nothing back, making it one of the funniest episodes of the show.

Manos the Hands of Fate – No, again the 4 points is not a mistake. This is one of those movies that is so bad it’s good. The bad and strange acting and the general cheapness of the celluloid quality add to the overall creepiness of the film, it is also a film that you really have to see to believe, it has a high rewatch and recommendation value, thus assuring it’s high points. That being said, it is still one of the best MST3K episodes, and it is in fact the best of the Joel episodes, thus giving it a five for the MST3K rating.

Melody Time – this is the second to last of the Disney Wartime Anthology Movies (the others are: Saludos Amigos, The Three Caballeros, Make Mine Music, Fun and Fancy Free, and The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad). Melody Time is tied with Aladdin as my favorite Disney movie. Sadly these wartime anthologies have gone under the raider and have been poorly remembered thanks to all the other traditional movies that have come out since them.

Mr. Deeds – Thanks to a single seen in this movie, I have lost all faith in and respect for Adam Sandler, and will not watch another one of his movies.

Native New Yorker – one of the few short films included on this list, it was filmed on a 1924 hand-crank silent movie camera. It took several years to film and includes scenes from 9/11 which occurred during the time of filming. If you can find it it’s definitely worth seeing. I am a fan of both silent movies and short films though both genres are hard to come across.

Parts: The Clonus Horror – this is actually probably the best movie that MST3K has heckled. In fact the movie alone is better than the heckling, and probably the only example of such. It features fine acting from Peter Graves. The other characters in it, on a superficial level are pretty flat as far as their acting goes, but they are supposed to be, because they have been brainwashed and lived in a strange peaceful world since birth and have not been hardened by the real world. It is a classic science fiction movie. Evidently it is also very similar to “The Island,” so much so that the makers of Parts had sued the makers of the island and settled out of court. It’s a good MST3K episode to boot.

The Pumaman – this movie is so offensively horrendously bad that I’ve only been able to watch the MST3K episode of it once. Its awfulness literally seeps out and consumes the heckling, it’s that bad. If you don’t believe me just watch the Pumaman Flight sequence, and then imagine that that seen is only 3% of the entire movie which continues to get worse and worse.

Romeo & Juliet – I’ve had to suffer through this movie twice, once in high school and once in college. Later on in my movie club, there was a desire to watch and discuss a Shakespeare movie. It was not my idea, but I was willing to go alone with it. The one caveat I had was that if we chose the 1968 Romeo & Juliet to discuss then I would not be going to that meeting or any film club meeting after that. We did not to the 1968 version; we did the Baz Lurman 1996 version, which is a movie I enjoy quite a bit. However thanks to a mix-up at the library, I ended up with a copy of the 1968 movie, and had to discuss the 96 version by memory several years later.

The Room – Yes this is the notoriously bad movie, and yes the rating I give it is accurate for a number of reasons: because it’s so bad it’s funny and therefor has replay and recommendation value, I find the movie more sad then bad, and it’s a keen example of how someone would view the world through broken English (i.e. to him everything in the movie seems right). that aside I am one of very few people who would give this movie this high of a review.

The Story of Mankind – the second movie in a three way tie for my favorite movie of all time. Often overlooked, forgotten, and/or poorly received, I’ve shown it to a dozen people so far and with one exception it has been met with lukewarm to negative reception. Technically and technically not a Marx Brothers Film, all three of the brothers appear in the movie (along with a pantheon of other great actors: Vincent Price, Ronald Colman (his final movie), Cesare Romero, John Carradine, Peter Lorie, Hedy Lamar (that’s “Hedy”), Denis Hopper, and 20+ more actors of the same caliber) however they are all in separate roles and do not act with each other. This is also the only movie that Malinda Marx was in along with her father the great Groucho Marx. Even though this movie is “tied” for first place, this is generally the best among the three.

What’s Up Tiger Lilly – the last of the three movies tied for first place, and probably also the lessor of the three, but I often plug it as one of if not my favorite, because of how strange, underrated, and funny it is. Depending on how you categorize these things this is either Woody Allen’s First or Second movie. It was originally a Japanese spy movie, sort of a James Bond knock off, that Woody Allen bought the rights to. He Removed the audio track of the movie and replaced it with his own audio track, and his own story about the world’s greatest egg salad recipe. For strange reasons I watch this movie every Christmas (and other times throughout the year).

When Worlds Collide – the first and only time that I saw this movie was at a friend’s house for a sleepover birthday party. His parents had the absolute worst taste in movies, and they picked this one to show us (for what reason I will never know), and it was so bad that it literally ruined my first year of Boy Scout camp, which occurred a whole week after seeing this movie. I was only 12 at the time and I couldn’t get the movie out of my head. It takes a lot to make a one star movie in my opinion, but this one is more than deserving of it. By the way this movie has nothing to do (I’m fairly sure) with the Powerman 5000 song of the same name, which is easily a 4 star song.

X-Men: The Last Stand – despite that this movie has a mid-range ratting, it is the sole reason why I have given up on super hero movies. It consisted of two cliffhanger endings where you really want to see what happens next, but the writers decided not to continue the storyline, and I decided to stop caring about superhero movies, hence the lack of superhero movies from after 2006, not that I liked them all that much beforehand.

Young Frankenstein – no this is not a mistake, this is a 1 star movie. I don’t like the Frankenstein story in general, nor do I like the universal monster movies. However a parody of those tropes could go either way. Given normal circumstances the movie would have received 2 points if it wasn’t for the fact that I have been hearing my entire life that this is the best Mel Brooks movie out there. This movie is in no way, absolutely no way, better than: Spaceballs, the Producers, or Robinhood Men in Tights, and it is not even remotely close to the Brooks Masterpieces of History of the World Part 1 or his absolute best Blazing Saddles.
